I've got this wonderful conundrum with a WAV file, whereas I cannot detect it's actual sample size (i.e. How many bits are in a sample) and the number of channels. Like other uncompressed sound files, WAV files consist of many thousands of individual samples of sound, like the frames of a film. A WAV's sample rate is usually. So which one is it: 16-bit or 32-bit?
Or is it 16-bit per channel? And how many channels does it have? 2 as in Stereo or 5 as in DTS? The info is again conflicting.
In other words, is there a tool that can accurately report the technical data for a WAV file, without getting confused by erroneous headers? As pointed out in, an excellent utility for this task is. MediaInfo is a convenient unified display of the most relevant technical and tag data for video and audio files.
In Windows XP, I used to use sndrec32.exe (Sound Recorder accessory) to open a wav file and the get properties on the file. This would display the length, data size, and audio format (e.g. GSM 6.10 8.000 kHz, Mono). There was also the option to convert the file to another format. I can't find this functionality in Windows 7. What is an alternative (hopefully built in)? SoundRecorder.exe in doesn't have this functionality.
I always wondered by sndrec32.exe did have that, but I would like to know where that functionality went. Update: Based on the comments, it looks like Vista might have this information in the properties (I can't verify this). The properties of a WAV file in Windows 7 does not.
